A few months ago I was invited to the Grand Opening of this new hip place in downtown Dallas called Tortaco. At first I was like “Hmm… Im sure this is going to be another one of those wanna be Mexican restaurants that flood the Dallas Metroplex area”. Once I stepped out of my car and went inside I was immediately amazed at the decor and the modern look of this restaurant. Then I actually was able to try the different foods and let me tell you.. It was far from what I expected. Tortaco is not your typical Mexican Restaurant, it is a restaurant filled with different cultures coming together with a Mexican twist as they introduce the typical torta, tacos and bowls.
Many of you do not know but I run a Dallas Food Blog with my friend Camille. So of course, we had to document everything and make sure that we told our Dallas folks how amazing this place was. If you decide to head to Tortaco, which we highly recommend for dinner with friends then you must try their Roasted Cauliflower, Roasted Crab Dip, and Pineapple and Goat Cheese Ceviche for starters. These appetizers are light and so yummy. Winning dishes to try with your friends.

For main dishes I would suggest getting the Hamachi bowl that is filled with fresh sliced yellowtail, roasted butternut squash, sweet potato, charred pineapple, and a lot more other yummy vegetables in a soy-lime jalapeño ponzu. Seriously, this dish is to die for. It is super light however, the yellowtail does it for me. If you are not a fan of raw fish then I suggest you go with the Truffle Steak. Now you can choose this particular item to go on tacos or a torta (pictured below). The truffle steak is seared beef tenderloin, with truffle aioli. And all my foodies say Hallelujahh! Seriously, this juicy steak and aioli go perfectly together, and the plantain chips that come next to it finish it off for us.
Now lets talk about their Mezcal, there are over 90 Mezcals here! You’re like but what is Mezcal? Well, its a much smoky cousin to tequila and unlike tequila that you most likely down with your girlfriends on a Friday night, Mezcal is actually a drink you can sip on. Also, we were told it doesn’t give you a hangover. So give us 10 right!?
Of course we couldn’t leave without dessert! This creamy date dessert is well, creamy and the perfect ending to our meal. It was not too sweet, not too rich, it was just right. So yes, for the perfect night with you friends, or for a cute date night you won’t regret coming to Tortaco.
